News from the Winchester Emerging Festival
Under 7s
A really enjoyable day played in a genuinely friendly atmosphere. The Under 7’s played some really great rugby from start to finish and improved throughout the competition. After a close opening match the team went from strength to strength, ultimately winning all six games to win the tournament.
All the players contributed to the success with much improved, and determined, defence and really positive attacking play – far better viewing than England v Italy! A great day was had by players, parents and coaches who all returned home very tired but content.

Pulborough v Devizes 4 – 4 Salisbury v Pulborough 5 - 3 New Milton v Pulborough 6 - 2 Winchester v Pulborough 6 – 2 A sterling effort from the 9 U8 players that turned out at the Winchester Emerging Festival. The team was made up of our second string players and they faced some stiff opposition. In fact there were a good number of players in the opposition who had quite obviously ‘emerged’ some time ago! Despite the odds the U8s scored a total of 11 tries in four matches. Harvey Betts, George Lock, Marcus Kirby and Harold Hardie scored their first tries in a tournament. Angus Todd excelled himself in defence and very narrowly missed scoring a try when it was disallowed. Top try scorers were Marcus Kirby, Laurie Maddalena and Will Lowdell. See you all for training next Sunday at home when we will be gearing things up in preparation for the Sussex Festival in March.
Best regards,
Nick Maddalena

To all the children that participated in today’s Emerging Tournament at Winchester.... WELL DONE ... WELL DONE.
You all played brilliantly and played so well as a team and it proved we are a force to be reckoned with... Only 1 try conceded in 5 matches and 5 wins... Not much to say ... But unstoppable..
Winchester Emerging Players CUP WINNERS...
To my coaches John & Nigel who marshalled you superbly... Well Done.. And might I say well refereed...
Keep up the good work and see you all for training next Sunday...

The Pulborough Emerging U11 Squad had a cold but successful festival at Winchester on Valentine’s Day – winning the plate final, after coming to life in the last 2 matches. They started off well with a 1-1 draw against Salisbury but then took a score battering 4-0 defeat against Winchester – although the score didn’t reflect the effort and drive the team was displaying. They lost their next match too, 2-0 against New Milton – two breakaway tries in the first half, by the same individual, made it hard for the squad to come back. So they needed to beat Gosport & Fareham to stand a chance of getting into the plate final. There was a long wait for the match – the squad tucked into food whilst supporters moaned about the delay! Rested and recharged they came out and put 2 tries on G&F in the first half of their crunch match. The defence in the second half was awesome – driving G&F back time and again, securing their win, 2-0. There was not long to wait for the final match – the adrenaline was still pumping and PRFC had a point to prove to Salisbury. The squad was focused, chased every kick, rucked well, drove forward and by half time were 1-0 up. The second half was more of the same, a ping-pong of penalties testing the supporters nerves until at last another Pulborough try – a collective drive pushing the man over the line, giving them victory 2-0. Pulborough’ s Emerging U11 squad thoroughly deserved their win and nobody was more thrilled or relieved than Mark and me, charged with looking after the group for the day. They were a real pleasure to spend Valentine’s Day with (even though I dragged both my special girls along with me). We really appreciated the 3 cheers at the end but know our place when the squad ran towards the tent, faster than during any match, for their team treat – a MARS bar (each)!
Well done everyone,
Harry

What another fantastic day, - after the suicidal efforts of Scotland yesterday making me say terrible things to our TV, I really needed cheering up. The Pulborough Vikings gave me just what I needed by coming 2nd in the U12 tournament. It was a fantastic effort, we beat Alton in a close match and lost to Winchester. The boys really gained confidence from the match against Winchester and played some great rugby to beat Salisbury. This set us up to play Winchester again to decide the winner of our age group. Unfortunately the boys and girls were a bit tired by this time and were beaten. Again a fantastic team effort and our first silverware for the Vikings. Our first ever double victory.
Well done everybody I am very proud of you.
John.
