Quins Curtain Raiser Cup Match Reports (
December 31, 2009)
U8's
We had 16 players come along to the Stoop on the 28th November – 12 in the squad and 4 first reserves. We played 3 matches against Ely, Tonbridge and Teddington. The squad consisted of those players who did not play at Quins last year – each player had a game and a half and the ‘first reserves’ had half a game each. To the extent that we played an emerging side, we did extremely well.
The scores were as follows:
Ely v Pulborough 3-3
Pulborough v Tonbridge 3-5
Pulborough v Teddington 2-5
There were excellent tries scored from the usual suspects although particular mention should go to Jack Lopez who did an excellent job as captain and Hugo Todd who scored his first try in a festival on the main pitch at the Stoop. I’m sure his twin brother will follow suit soon! Well done all – an excellent performance.

U12s
The Harlequins Curtain raiser tournament was eagerly anticipated by the players as we had a number of training sessions and tournaments disrupted by bad weather. The first match was against Teddington, a well drilled side who went on to win our pool. Teddington were a bit sharper at the kick off and scored within the first few minutes. The players responded magnificently to this rude wake up and played very well for the remainder of the match only losing by 1 try to nil. We were very unlucky not to win the next game against New Milton, we had the majority of possession and territory but some excellent last ditch defending by New Milton denied us the win and the match was drawn with no score. By the third game against Twickenham we were gaining in confidence and playing more open rugby. It was a hard fought game against another well organised team but we emerged as winners by 1 try to nil. We saved the best till last, playing some excellent rugby, the forwards secured very good ball and the backs played some exciting running rugby, scoring 5 tries to Nil.
Congratulations to all the players, we have qualified for the next stage of the tournament.
