Round up from the first Festivals of the Season (October 12, 2009)
Under 7s Guildford

Won 3 (Cobham, Wimbledon & Old Wimbledonians) and narrowly lost final pool game to Winchester 3-2. Tremendous effort from the team whose defence was outstanding throughout and despite a few tears at the end they were all smiling when they left Under 8’s Guildford and Chichester Guildford: Won 1, Drew 1, Lost 2 Chichester: Lost 3, Won 1. The penny finally dropped in the last game at Chichester when the team won 7-0. Great support from the parents at both events and the kids played very well in all of the games losing by one point in all but one of the games when they lost to the finalists. On the whole very good effort considering it was the first tournament of the season.

A great effort from both sides with some excellent tackling from all players especially when we consider this is their first season of contact. Support from the mass of parents was fantastic and was rewarded with both sides providing some quality rugby. As one coach put it, ‘they were like seasoned pro’s’. Both sides won their first 3 games and their was a chance at this stage they would meet in the final. Unfortunately one team narrowly lost their last game 1-0 and the other drew. This resulted a plate final for the ‘Pumas’ who gave their all, but come out in the end as valiant losers. A great day was had by all and all coaches were immensely proud of all the players and the parents support.

For the second year running we did ourselves proud with both teams qualifying for the finals with some excellent Rugby played throughout the day.

The Pumas qualified for the finals top of their group having scored 17 tries only conceding 2 winning 3 matches & drawing one against Staines, and then had to play them again narrowly losing 3-2 in their final

The Panthers qualified top of their group also scoring 16 tries & conceding 0 in their 3 games, with Brighton having pulled out! They must be scared of Pulborough! They then went on to very narrowly lose 4-3 to Twickenham.

The highlights for me today were the team play throughout each match, and how impressive every player on the pitch was in every match, and the support from the mums & dads was immense. The forwards won lots of ball & the backs did their job scoring lots of tries. My fellow coaches did a great job with the 2 squads, thanks guys, when the boys play to their potential it does make all the training seem worth it.

Singling out individual players would be the wrong thing to do, however a special mention should go to Laurens, Sam & Tate who i thought all played exceptionally today, who will forget Laurens great try (with 3 players glued to him) and his constant running , Sam's awesome tackling in the final & Tates great runs today.

It's back to Pulborough next sunday a little battered & bruised but with medals & a trophy & a great start in our first tournament of the season

First match was against Wimbledon won 2 tries to 1 with tries by Jack Wheaton and Henry Campbell. Second match was a tighter encounter drawing 1 all with Old Reigatians with Henry Campbell again scoring a try. There was some fantastic defence to hold them out and hold on for the draw. Third match was against Cobham who had some big rumbling forwards but Pulborough won 2 tires to nil with Ciaran Keating and Henry Campbell going over for tries. The final pool game and pool decider was against an unbeaten Winchester team but they were also beaten 2 tries to nil with Henry Campbell then Ciaran Keating going over for tries. This put Pulborough into the third/fourth place play off against Farnham. Again this was a very tight encounter with no score in the first half. Farnham then went over to score in the middle of the second half and despite some good runs deep into the Farnham half, especially from Sam Fisher and Howard Blackbee Pulborough could not find the score to level the match. Everyone made a contribution and played really well for the first festival of the season adjusting to the under 11 laws. The new players all got stuck in and played their part. Having scored 7 tries in total and only conceding 3 was a great effort and the coaching team were very proud of the team’s efforts finishing fourth out of 16 teams.

Under 12’s Our boys did well at HH, drew with Heathfield and beat the other 2 teams. Guildford was good too we lost 2 matches and won 1, all in all a very good outing for the U12s.
